Temple Lights Goes Public:
Reimagining East Asian Cultural Memory in Communities
INSPRIATION
During my journey through East Asia, I noticed that many cultural traditions survive not because they remain unchanged, but because societies continuously find new ways to present them.
I noticed that many cultural traditions survive not because they remain unchanged, but because societies continuously find new ways to present them.
Sparked by first-hand fieldwork documenting fading ancient temples in Shanxi, China, this curatorial project explores low-carbon LED display as an accessible new carrier for East Asian cultural memory—translating static heritage into public, shareable experiences without compromising cultural accuracy.

TIMELINE
This timeline walks through how I built this project from 2025 to 2026: I started with field trips to ancient mountain temples in Shanxi, then expanded research to related architectural and folk heritage across East Asia. I later tested prototypes and low-energy solutions with LED industry partners, before developing the final public digital exhibition. Instead of chasing fancy tech effects, I focused on accessible, low-carbon digital ways to turn overlooked old stories into interactive, shareable cultural experiences for all visitors.

ACTION
Technology & Exhibition Design
Addressing the problem of outdated heritage communication and disconnection from young audiences, I moved beyond static captions and "glass-case" display models. I transformed first-hand field materials from Shanxi ancient temples into dynamic digital content tailored for energy-efficient LED screens. With motion-sensing and multi-screen interactive features, I turned passive viewing into immersive, shareable experiences that fit how young people consume content and spread culture.

IMPACT & METRICS
LED & AI-Empowered Cultural Heritage Preservation
LED breaks the physical boundaries of cultural venues, bringing heritage to public spaces such as campuses and communities to expand its reach. AI accelerates endangered heritage digitization by 10-fold, delivering an order-of-magnitude efficiency leap via scalable intelligent systems. The two technologies reshape experiences through immersive interaction, turning passive visitors into active participants. By reinterpreting craftsmanship in youth-friendly formats, they enable intergenerational cultural transmission.
